Understanding Your BMI Result
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation based on your height and weight. It provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
The BMI Formula
Our calculator supports both measurement systems used globally:
- Metric System: Weight (kg) / [Height (m)]²
- Imperial System: [Weight (lb) / [Height (in)]²] x 703
Standard BMI Weight Categories
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), BMI results are categorized as follows:
| BMI Range | Weight Status |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal or Healthy Weight |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and Above | Obese |
Health Risks of a High BMI
Individuals with a high BMI (Overweight or Obese) may be at an increased risk for several health conditions, including:
- Hypertension (High blood pressure)
- Type 2 diabetes
- Coronary heart disease
- Sleep apnea and breathing problems
Important Limitations
While BMI is a great screening tool, it is not a diagnostic tool. It does not measure body fat directly. For example, a muscular athlete might have a high BMI but very low body fat. Always consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough health assessment.
